20 C + M + B 16 - Making Ephiphany A Personal Tradition

Do you observe Epiphany?

Coming from a liturgical church foundation in childhood, I miss some of the ways the church year marks time...today is Epiphany,  a day that we can learn more about and how to use it to be more aware of Jesus in our lives...it is the time when Christ is revealed to the world!

Epiphany is the day that liturgical churches observe the visit of the wise men to baby Jesus...their simple desire to worship the King is the precursor to serious outbursts in the hearts of those who should have been lovers of God, but weren't.

The tradition’s origins are obscure, but the practice has its echoes in the story of the Israelite exiles in Egypt marking their doors with lamb’s blood so that the angel of the Lord will pass over their homes when it comes to kill the firstborn of Egypt. In Deuteronomy, the Israelites are told to write God’s words on their hearts, their gates and the doorposts of their houses, and to talk about them when they are at home.

Epiphany celebrates the fact that Jesus came for all people as the Holy Family accepted the worship of Gentiles/foreigners.  Foreigners bowing before the new king shows that God offers the Messiah to the whole world, not to just one race or nation.

Read Matthew 2:1-12 to get the full story!

(Another interesting fact - the 12 Days of Christmas is really the 12 days from Christmas Day to Epiphany...the song itself was a code which persecuted Christians used so that they could continue to worship and adore their King secretly. The song can be used to remember to pray for the persecuted church in today's time.)

In modern times, some people observe a tradition passed on since the second century.  It is called "Chalking the Door".  Over the main entrance into the home, a designated member of the family writes the first two numbers of the new year, then C + M + B, and finally the last two numbers of the new year.  The plus signs in between the letters represent the cross For this year, if you want to adopt this simple practice, you would write:

20 C + M + B 16

Finally, all gathered pray a prayer of blessing over each person living in the home and entering in during the year...

The letters C, M, and B are the first letters of each word in the Latin phrase Christus mansionem benedicat—"Christ, bless this home". We want the blessing of Christ, the peace and joy and love of the God-Man— to fill our home, to fill our hearts, to be the very air we breathe as we go about our daily work.

The letters are also a call—because C, M, and B are the initials of the Wise Men whose names (according to tradition) were Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. These men left all they knew and held dear to follow a star—because they believed that what they’d find would surpass all they were leaving behind.  The initials over the door remind us to be like the Magi—so we write their initials on our door to remind us, each time we come into our house, of our desire, our intention to follow the Light.

Here is what other have said about their "chalking the door" tradition:
When I see those letters (and I confess, I often pass beneath them, oblivious of their presence, their call), but when I remember to pay attention and I actually see them, I say a prayer: “Help me, Jesus, to see you.Help me to hear you. Help me to follow you.”

In this daily following, we become the magi, answering the call of the star in our small way—and so, by the grace of God, we become the answer to our prayer that Christ would bless our home and all who enter.

Around the world there are different ways to observe the tradition.  Many wear crowns, carry stars, and sing and pray as they move through their neighborhoods, chalking the doors.  In Germany celebrants sing Segen bringen, segen sein (Bring the blessing to be a blessing).

How can you make this tradition your own?  Consider the wise men and their journey...take different aspects of their story and personalize it:

1.  Stars are used to navigate at night.  Is there a place of darkness, of not knowing, in your life that needs the light of Jesus to shine into it?  Is there already a direction that you have been pointed in, but the journey must be all by faith?

2. Take the journey, even amidst the unknowns. The star speaks to a need to trust that the end will be good and full of His presence!

3.  Be open to joy and wonder, even (especially?) in the dark times.  The wise men were full of joy when they saw the star (Matthew 2:10).  What treasures of joy and wonder might the Lord be trying to give you when you are journeying in the darkness?

4.  Give out of your gifts that you carry with you!  The wise men's gifts represented that they understood who Jesus was.  Each gift reflected different aspects of Jesus' ministry and personhood...the gold represented His deity, the myrrh represented His anointing as the Messiah, and frankincense represented His priestly intercession for all mankind.  How can you give out of your gifts and reflect Jesus to those you come across?

What other insights for your life can you gain from the visit of the Magi?

My word for the year - "Finish"

Hearing my word for 2014 really happened during the regular time frame...during the month of January...it is just now that I seem to have time to write about it...

The word whispered around the back portions of my mind - I wasn't sure if it was just my need to accomplish cleaning off my desk in my office/art studio, or gaining some sort of organization after 6 months of seeming chaotic life...(my desk is still piled, but project after project is moving off...FINISHED!)

"FINISH"!

It is a triumphant call - He calls me to "finish" because He declared "It is finished"...Everything is settled...

He will perfect that which concerns me -
He has given us everything I need for life and Godliness -
His gift and calling is irrevocable -

I looked at places where the word shows up in Scripture, and found three that leaped out to me:

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  James 1:4 NIV
Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.  2 Corinthians 8:11 NIV
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace.   Acts 20:24 NIV

The very day I decided that the word dancing around my mind had the emphasis of the Spirit with it, this article was delivered to my inbox:

There is an "It is Finished" sound in the kingdom. Are we releasing it?

This excerpt captures the tone of what I was hearing:
The governmental power of 'NOW Sound" is that we know He is King, it is finished, and Father is governing through the release of the sound of His sons and we are releasing what He is revealing, right here, right NOW!

When I read about worship, I automatically include the act of creating any art, honoring Him by releasing the creativity He has placed within us, in the context of worship...

He is saying:

Finish the race I have set before you...
I have released you into the fullness of your passions and calling!

Finish the creative explosions released within you...
Release the creativity I have placed within you to the sphere of your influence!

Finish through perseverance...
Maturity and completeness come only through the daily practice of reaching towards Me, seeking to reflect Me to the world...in all you do, keep going, experimenting, exploring, wondering, making, moving, ministering, revealing...

I hear Him cheering me on...
What will He accomplish in this coming year?  I cannot wait as I consider all the ideas, half formed, some almost complete...finished!

Quiet White...

Our neighbor's fence last year...of course it hasn't been nearly close to this cold yet this year!
There is something so quiet and embracing evoked by a thick blanket of white snow...
as if the Creator of it all
is softly speaking a gentle "hush"
and inviting us to "be still and know Him"...

Love, God...

The beauty of this world, a life made valuable because He has said we are, the still season of contemplation, of slowing activity leading to the quiet rest of winter - and gatherings...enjoy this love note from God as nature prepares us for His Advent...

How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is!
He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in Him.
Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind,
had settled on us as the focus of His love,
to be made whole and holy by His love.
Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ.
(What pleasure He took in planning this!)
He wanted us to enter into the celebration of His lavish gift-giving by the hand of His beloved Son.

Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah,
His blood poured out on the altar of the Cross,
we’re a free people—
free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds.
And not just barely free, either.

Abundantly free!

He thought of everything,
provided for everything we could possibly need,
letting us in on the plans He took such delight in making.
He set it all out before us in Christ,
a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him,
everything in deepest heaven,
everything on planet earth.

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.
Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up,
He had his eye on us,
had designs on us for glorious living,
part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone.

(via Vintage Indie)

It’s in Christ that you,
once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation),
found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit.
This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming,
a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us,
a praising and glorious life.

Love, God

That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus
and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus,
I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—
every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks.

But I do more than thank.
I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—
to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing Him personally,
your eyes focused and clear,
so that you can see exactly what it is He is calling you to do,
grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life He has for His followers,
oh, the utter extravagance of His work in us who trust Him—
endless energy, boundless strength!

Reflections on Solitude...

An assignment from Beyond Layers...everyone gets the same image to play with...and find a quote that fits with what the image speaks to each... Closely related to my One Word for 2012, contemplate, is the word solitude...and several more good quotes:

Inside myself is a place where I live all alone, and that's where I renew my springs that never dry up.  ~Pearl Buck

True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.  ~William Penn

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.  ~John Muir

It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.  ~K.T. Jong

Language... has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone.  And it has created the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone.  ~Paul Johannes Tillich, The Eternal Now

And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place
and rest a while..." Mark 6:31 NASB

Taking a Chance/Changing

This post is really a response to this week's lesson (challenge?) for Beyond Layers...a sort of "get YOURSELF out of the box you have put yourself in" sort of thing (my paraphrase)...we are asked to shake things up a bit:  take a new route, try a new recipe, do something totally out of the ordinary for you, take a photograph -not your usual style...

For me, being in this class, doing anything photographic is a challenge, out of the box per se.
I am an artist (Yes!  I can say that!)  I am learning to approach my life as an artistic expression -
I know my life is an expression of my faith, my relationship with my Creator, too...when I lose myself in creating, becoming collaborator with the greatest of Creators - I feel content, complete...

I am in this class to learn Photoshop, not photography - yet I can get caught up in competing with my own skills in trying to get good images out of that little point and shoot...I know:

it has stretched me artistically...

it has distracted me artistically {smiling - when I get stuck on trying 50 different ways to make one photo - is that bad?  ☺♥}...

it has caused me to look at my life in more detail, as I look through the the view finder of the little black rectangle that is my occasional instrument of art.

it has caused me to think and to desire to teach what I am learning to others (but I don't know how to fit that into the online counseling site....)

...and how to balance the counseling, the therapy as art, and the art has been the constant journey of the past 16 months...and that is truly my "out of the box" challenge for myself - to package the passions, the leadings, even the Spirit's direction in a cohesive, logical and creative way that will reach the hearts of women (and men if that is to be)...

Just a "screen capture" using my little snip tool...

I keep snags of ideas on a pinterest board - that will be my "photo graphical" offering today: and you can get a deeper view as well... the "For 12Tribes" board + the two "Finding Sanctuary" boards are my places I pin things that might further the vision for my ultimate online presence...(click here if you want to go visiting!)

And you, how do you weave together your leadings, passions, callings?

The Whispers of {small fears} and God's "Fear Nots"

This post is done in a journaling style called "Free Writing" - part of a writing sequence I teach to clients to help them get to the bottom of issues, or even just to clear out emotional clutter...it is part of Kim's assignment this week in Beyond Layers...

Fear. I know there is a block in my brain about this because when asked to name my fears I cannot. I don't even really acknowledge immediately that I have any.  But I still hear its whispers.  It is like it is in another place than my conscious awareness, but still there ready to immobilize me when I can't control if I pay attention to it or not. But is that true?  I think if I paid attention to it I would be able to work through it...somewhere I read that fear is something that we deal with every day and being afraid doesn't stop the thing we are afraid of from happening to us. I did realize earlier this year when working through the topic that I was afraid of being successful, that I didn't "know" what that person looked like and that somehow my friends and family wouldn't recognize me and wouldn't like me? Weird, but there it was. Now I realize that there is more fear...fear of rejection is there. Fear of failure? No, I haven't been able to succeed for whatever reason in over a year, so I am used to failure. I think perhaps there is a fear that isn't well defined, that is just floating - that is the subconscious fear. I have tried to battle it by learning, knowledge...there it is! Fear of not knowing the right thing,of doing something "wrong"! Irrational, nothing bad will happen if I do it "wrong" - my husband supports me, so financial chaos isn't even a concern! Interesting, interesting. I am turning around and facing this fear, embracing this fear, not viewing it as the monster it can become, but as a real part of my human nature. It doesn't have a life of its own. It is just there to tell me of the need for fight or flight, but more often, that I am simply out of my comfort zone. I spent time over the Christmas break examining if I was out from God's will, and He overwhelmingly confirmed that I was being led by His Holy Spirit. Perhaps all this is part of the preparation process, and I know sweet tweener is in a season of desperately needing me...I can totally trust God to be in control of all this - I just need to show up and work on the therapeutic art ideas that are swimming around inside of me! I also think about how, in the scripture, there are at least 365 times that He says "fear not". I have always thought about those places as applying to those souls who deal with concrete, conscious fears and who haven't yet had the opportunity to grow to that place of trust in the Lord to know, to really know, that they don't have to be afraid - major fear, you know? The sort of fear I walk alongside clients to help them face, to be Jesus with skin on as they learn and grow.  But those places can also help me when I wonder if anyone will like what I am creating, whether there is a market, am I doing this "right", and so on...the non-major issues that He cares about just as deeply as the major...

"Fear not" He whispers in a chuckle.  (I think I just got an idea for Kim's whisper assignment - finally!)  Why am I not enjoying this total freedom?!

I remember when I was confident and "knew" in a right and strong way that I had good answers and good instincts...I just didn't have support or understanding on how to move through the blocks that life itself would throw in my way...but I have learned...

"Fear not!" One phrase whispered in my spirit for each time fear whispers in my mind.

I think I am finally understanding...a deeper level of becoming.  A deeper level of healing self-rejection (oh yes, I did that, the self-rejection thing).  Fear can be my teacher, my cue to spend some time with Him, contemplating the issue...

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom - Luke 12:32 KJV
Fear not, for I am with you...Isaiah 43:5 ESV
Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming...John 12:15 ESV
Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice, for the LORD has done great things...Joel 2:21 ESV

Today's Reading from "God Calling"

Shower Love
I always hear your cry. No sound escapes Me.
Many, many in the world cry to Me, but oh! how few wait to hear Me speak to them and yet to the soul, My speaking to it matters so much.
My words are Life. Think then, to hear Me speak is to find Life, and healing and strength. Trust Me in all things. Love showered on all brings truly a quick return.
Just carry out My wishes and leave Me to carry out yours. Treat Me as Savior and King, but also with the tender intimacy of One much beloved.
Keep to the rules I have laid down for you, persistently, perseveringly, lovingly, patiently, hopefully, and in faith, and every mountain of difficulty shall be laid low, the rough places of poverty shall be made smooth, and all who know you shall know that I, your Lord, am the Lord.
