Healing is the Very Heart of God!

I was already in college, pursuing my counseling degree, when Joyce Meyers talked about "Inner Healing" on her radio show. "He [God] wants to heal you," she said. "After all, He is living in your heart where all this is." She shared three scriptures that to her were foundational to her understanding. I took notes in my journal.

Today, I cannot find that page (or even that journal!), but I do remember these two passages that she used:
The LORD is near to the brokenhearted And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18
                                      and
3 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
 Isaiah 42:3

In this 2nd verse, the author is using metaphors to convey the idea is that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is very gentle, knowledgeable, and kind when it comes to our brokenness or mess ups.

“A bruised reed” is a reference to the reeds that were used to make musical instruments…a kind of flute or pipe. If a reed was bruised, it wasn’t chosen, or if it was bruised during the holes being drilled, it was worthless and only good to be thrown away…often being broken in two and tossed away because it was now useless for anything.

The "smoldering wick" is sort of self-explanatory – if a light – candle or lamp – is flickering and in danger of going out, He doesn’t just go ahead and help it go out…He helps fan the spark into a full flame.

So often, a person may feel that places that are already bruised, broken or smoldering are being crushed further…

The image of God that you carry within determines if you believe He will help you or destroy you.

The Bible is clear - God loves us:
And Paul, the writer of Romans, further explains:
31 What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us,who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? 33 Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. 34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36 As it is written:

“For your sake we face death all day long;
we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”[j]

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 8:31-39 (NIV)

There is nothing that can separate us from the love of God!

Healing is at the very heart of God. "I am the lord, who heals you" (Ex. 15:26). The healing theme runs throughout the meta narrative of the Bible: Creation to Fall to redemption to consummation. Every stage involves healing, restoration, reconciliation, and transformation of God's people in spirit, soul (mind, will, emotion), and body through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Christianity Today)

It is my hope that you know, without a shadow of doubt, that God's will is to heal you, to bring you to wholeness, to show you tenderness and love while you are on this journey, and that confidence and trust in His care for you will grow and flourish in your heart.

Till next time...

20 Types of Thoughts That Indicate a Need for Inner Healing

Are any of these thoughts showing up in your mind lately?

1. Why am I still experiencing panic attacks and anxiety? I have committed myself to God...

2. Why is it that the promises of Scripture don’t seem to apply to me?

3. Why does my life hurt, and why can’t I seem to hear God in the midst of it?

4. Why does it feel like my prayers are just hitting the ceiling?

5. Do I not have enough faith because I have a mental health diagnosis?

6. Is God is disappointed in me, even though He loves me?

7. Why don’t I feel the peace God promises when I love Him so passionately?

8. How come I still seem to have trouble in my relationships even though I have put my difficult past behind me?

9. My abuse was so severe, and I am told to “forgive and forget”.  How can I do that?  And, if the truth be told, I don’t want to do that!

10. What does it really mean, to forgive?

11. I am angry, does that mean I haven’t forgiven?

12. What does it mean to be created in God’s image?

13. If God is the source of unconditional love, why can I not read the Bible with anything but judgment and condemnation?

14. I can't get rid of these "Negative" feelings! (anger, sadness, feeling rejected, low self-worth, depression, anxiety, worry, suicidal thinking, etc.)

15.  Where are these strange intrusive thoughts coming from?

16.  God must be mad at me; no matter how much I pray or get prayed for, I still cannot _______.   (you fill in the blank)

17. Why do I have the same recurring dreams/nightmares?

18.  Prayer just doesn't work for me; I never feel like anything changes.

19.  Is my depression really just a lack of faith?

20.  If I'm not perfect, or my family isn't perfect, people (and God) will be disappointed in me.

Some people call these types of thoughts dysfunctional, some call them the lies we believe, some call them, somewhat hopelessly, 'This is just the way I am'.  No matter what you call them, know that you are NOT alone!  Everyone has had these thoughts - if you know they are causing you inner turmoil, this is the time to do some probing into where they are coming from...

These thoughts are common among God's people, whether they are still struggling within the church, or have given up seeking answers within the context of a spiritual community.  Perhaps there is trauma or abuse in their past.  Perhaps they grew up in a family that was in the throes of addiction.  Perhaps they simple had a sensitive heart, a child's perception of life, and no one noticed a heart receding and cloaking itself to avoid emotional pain.

These thoughts reflect places in the soul that don't fully comprehend the truth of God, His all encompassing, unconditional love, His embracing of us in the midst of flaws as well as so called strengths.  There is nothing hidden before His eyes, and He desires to lead us into a complete understanding of His ways.

These thoughts can be changed!  The foundational premise of all inner healing is that "God desires truth in the inward parts:
Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being,
And in the hidden part You will make me know wisdom.
                 Psalm 51:6
What a beautiful promise!  He will make me know His wisdom in my hidden parts - those parts/thoughts that don't know His ways yet, where these thoughts flow from!  He is already at work, but He waits for us to join Him in order that we can learn and apply the wisdom He is imparting...

And learning how to join with Him, to discern His wisdom and truth as well as the faulty beliefs driving those troubling thoughts, is what this blog is all about.

My Top 5 Healthy Living Blogs

Hello Everyone!

My January is always a quiet month as I use the time to get focused on what the rest of my year will look like...and that is what I have been doing!

This is the year that you will get an inside look at what I do in bringing inner healing to my clients.

One of the drawbacks of online work is the inability to actually have you come to me in person, but with technology’s innovations, we can work "face to face" in a manner of speaking at least!  Another benefit of technology is the ability to work at one’s own pace, or even work during the middle of the night instead of the normal 9 to 5 office hours!

So, if you were going to come see me on a professional basis, there is a little paper work you need to fill out first.  One of the most important questions in my intake form is this:

“When was the last time you saw a doctor?”

More than the answer, this question serves as a “trigger” to get a client thinking about the possible organic roots of the problems they are having.  I am serious about getting a medical evaluation though, and will work with a client to get them a check up if one is due.  Many problems have organic roots, and relationships between the mind and the body aren't always understood.  Sometimes medical doctors don't understand these relationships either, so I also seek to provide valid information to educate my clients.  What am I talking about?  Habits of our daily lives may be contributing to organic issues, which in turn affect our minds and emotions.

You see, we live in an industrialized nation.  We know that air pollution and water pollution are issues that we need to be concerned about.  But we may not be as well educated about the toxins or chemicals that we come in contact with or absorb due to our laundry soap, our cleaning products, our cosmetics, our soaps, our fabrics, our furniture, our convenience foods, our processed foods, or even food that is marketed as healthy.  Chemicals added to our water supply to make it safer for consumption can cause their own problems in our bodies.

I was glad when the Lord began to open my eyes to the need to eat clean and be aware of physical toxins that are common in the environment (not just toxic people and relationships!), yet it is overwhelming for me to keep up with it all!  What I have found are several bloggers and business people whose passion is to educate others about how to live and eat “clean”.  Today I am sharing my favorites, the ones that I subscribe to so I can have access to good research, handy tips, and great recipes for living "clean", whole foods and natural remedies!

I am NOT getting any revenue from sharing these businesses - these are simply the ones I love and choose to follow.

First:

They cover healthy living in all of its facets, including home making, cooking (healthy whole food of course), natural remedies and natural products, essential oils, child rearing, and on and on…If you only had time to read one blog, this is the one I would recommend.

Second:

“25 Day Grace Filled Journey to Real Food”.

Her recipes are fantastic and her approach is truly grace-laden.  She shares her recent struggles after being exposed to mold in the home they were renting, and how that struggle has refined her health journey.  You will love reading her encouraging words.

Third:

Fourth:

Catherine does an excellent job of teaching which “health” fads you should avoid, which foods and toxins to stay away from and why you should.

She doesn’t hold back information to try to get you to join her site, but she does have a coaching program.  Do a search about why you shouldn’t do a sugar detox, why you shouldn’t get a mammogram, why our ancestors didn’t suffer from food allergies, and anything to do with hormones.

God Will Rewrite Our Story...Plus 5-Steps to Healing Hurt HeARTs Prompt

Each one of us has a story...

Every day we are "writing" that story in the way we live our lives.

Some days we do better writing than on other days...

Unlike an author that writes with pen and ink, or even types, we cannot throw what we have written away...or what someone else has pushed in and written what they willed on our story

Over the course of time, our skills improve.
We meet people who help us along the way.
People become a part of our story whether we invite them into it or not.
Challenges, joys, griefs, fellowship, laughter, dancing, births and deaths;
mistakes and successes; transformations and inspirations....

All are transcribed on the pages of our lives...

The good parts; the painful parts; the parts we regret eventually...

Everything is there - nothing can be thrown away or erased...

But there is another Author.  The One who has written upon all of history.

When we submit our "manuscript" to Him, and let His careful eye read;
He doesn't erase.  He doesn't reject.  He doesn't throw away.

2 Corinthians 3:3

He rewrites.  He writes over the places that need help.  He writes over the pain and mistakes and regret and doesn't remove their fact...

By His writing, He redeems our story.

Nothing is removed - it is reframed and written by the Author's hand to reflect what He knows is true.
And as He writes, a miracle occurs...

We begin to see as He does, and we begin to co-author our stories with His...
Just as in any good story, there is a beginning, a climax, and then the end...
Between the beginning and the end, there must be a conflict...

Healing Art/Healing Journaling Prompt

(Please read through the entire entry before you begin.  This will give you a better experience as you will know what to expect as opposed to 'just winging it'!)

In my last post I shared a spontaneous journaling piece I had done that morning. As I was writing that blog entry, I remembered this technique I had tried several years ago, journaling on top of journaling to make interesting marks on art...I don't believe I ever published anything with it, as I was still practicing - I still like the look of it - and the idea of "abstract journaling" comes to mind...

The "look" is abstract; or modernistic if you prefer - but it isn't random.  In putting new writing on top of the old, we are becoming co-authors with God, rewriting our past with His promises and truth - His words coupled with the act of writing will help cement His promises in our hearts (not to mention that you will end up with something that looks very contemporary to use in your art, or just keep in your journal.)1

Supplies:

Prepared art journaling page or plain journal - even just a sheet of paper of choice
writing tool
a Bible

Step 1:

Prepare to write.  Close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly three times.  Still your mind.  Ask the Lord for His Presence and guidance for this prompt.  Pay attention to what comes up in your mind:  is it an image; words; an emotion felt even in the body?  Jot down 3 - 5 words that will help to remind you of what came up at the top of the paper or journal you have with you.

 Step 2:

Using free writing (quickly writing the stream of thoughts and ideas flowing through your mind without regard to proper grammar or punctuation), write the words that come to you concerning the topic found in Step 1.  You might want to set a timer for around 5 minutes for this portion, so you don't get bogged down in possible negative thoughts or memories.  This is just a suggestion, not a hard, fast rule!  Remember that healing art is supposed to be fun!

Once written, do you need to step away for a few minutes to ground yourself or regroup?  You can drink a cup of tea or coffee, take a short walk, move around for the duration of a favorite song or two.  These activities help to get you "out of your head" and into the present.

Consider if you want to do the next part of this exercise now or wait a while or even wait till tomorrow.  Any decision is perfect for you - and waiting may give you more time to 'hear God' for His promises and purposes and healing words for what you have written.  You may want to take time to search the Scriptures for specific verses that apply to what you have written (trusting that the Holy Spirit will "illuminate" the one's He specifically is leading you towards)

Step 3:

Return to your journal entry and begin to write over the top of your previous writing any words, promises, quotes, verses, etc.  that you believe the Lord is saying to you about the topic.  You can write in any direction!  For my piece, I turned my original journaling upside down and then wrote over the top of it.  I got some nice upstrokes and downstrokes over the course of my page using this method.  Write as much as you like.  If you run out of new words to cover your original writing, just begin to repeat until all of your original entry is covered.  Or, if you have more new words than old, you can stop when the old is covered OR begin a third layer of writing!  Fun!  And the Lord may speak something to your heart about these layers covering your original!

Step 4:

Add extra embellishments if you like.  I noticed swishes and dots (from dotting my "i's" and "js", and I had space to add embellishments and liked the way it turned out.  (Plus, it gave me some additional practice with my dip pen!)

Step 5:

You might want to do a little reflective journaling about what you learned through the process.  Consider documenting the words, scripture, quotes and promises that you used in your overwriting to keep them as a legible way to remember what God has written over your heart!

Need some ideas for God's promises?

Check these links:

Promises that speak to fear and anxiety
Promises that speak to worrying
Promises that speak of God's love for you
Promises that speak to times you feel overwhelmed
Promises that speak of God's compassion and mercy
Promises that speak of His constant presence
Romans 8 is a tremendous chapter of the blessings we have because we are God's children.
And finally, a list of "I am" through the promises of God verses (also known as our identity in Christ)

Blessings!

Practicing Awareness - an Overview: 7 Steps into Fully, Creatively Living

The glory of God is man fully alive...
St. Ireneus

I have mentioned before that I am a collector
and that is part of the appeal of pinterest and tumblr for me...a way of having a large collection of things I like that takes up virtually "no space"...

How does "collecting" fit into the topic of "Awareness", of being "Fully Alive" and how do these topics influence our art?

As is often the case, I sit down to write what seems to be a simple post, and so much more comes forth...the 7 item list at the bottom begs to be expanded upon, and will be!

To begin, the topic of "awareness" is important in the counseling realm as people are prone to live their lives on "automatic pilot".  Days pass by in a seeming blur, and if one seeks help to find out why their lives are dysfunctional, the individual really can have difficulty finding how their choices have played into their present discomfort {thus why the Scripture declares "in the abundance of counselors there is wisdom"}.  Indeed, when an action/choice/decision has become a habit, it is more difficult for the person with that habit to perceive its existence.  It takes a concentrated, focused effort to perceive and in the case of Christians, a good dose of relying on the Presence of the Holy Spirit to lead into all truth!

Our own God-created physiology can play into the development of "automatic living".  Our skin is designed to acclimate to the feel of clothing or accessories so that we don't notice them within seconds of being placed against the skin.  Our brains are designed to develop the ability to "attend" to certain designated important stimulus while at the same time screening out unimportant stimulus.  These two functions are important to our ability to live our days without distraction, but if lived apart from God or if lived "by might {flesh} and not by Spirit", these functions can lead us into numbness or bewilderment about our inability to experience the abundant life promised to us.

Our minds were also created to momentarily detach {or dissociate} from trauma so that we can do what is necessary to survive.  In some cases, dissociation has become a way of life instead of a defensive strategy to use in a crises.

Awareness, or living in the reality of the present, becomes a needed skill for each of these cases.  So how does one develop {or redevelop} this sense of awareness?  Think of how a young child approaches each day...it is an adventure of new sensations and experiences; curiosity and discovery are normal.  They are open to the adventure of life.  Exploration and revelation are ever before them.  How can we reclaim the sense of adventure and revelation?  Following is a list of suggestions - 7 - try one a day, and then repeat!

 Awareness enhancing activities:

1.  Spend 5 minutes paying attention to your surroundings with your senses.  List (one word to keep is simple) what you hear, see, smell, taste, or can sense through your skin (hot, cold, comfortable, how do your clothes feel, what you are sitting on, etc.)  Consider taking one sense each day, and on days 6 and 7 write reflections on what the senses have revealed to you, or your thoughts about the exercise, or how paying attention to your senses has increased you awareness of the rest of your life.

2.  Count blessings.  3 a day gets you to 1000 over the course of a year.  Do you need a nudge on how to start?  Ann Voskamp's blog, A Holy Experience, has a link to prompts by month. (Plus information how giving thanks for the blessings makes good habits that lead to fuller lives is included.)

3.  Take a break every afternoon at the same time.  Sit down, drink a cup of tea (or in my case, rich dark coffee - no sugar or cream please); don't multi-task, but keep a journal and pencil handy - but this is not journaling time, not even a list making time.  When a thought of "I should" or the list of "to dos" starts running through your mind, just jot them down in the journal quickly for future reference, let the responsibility for it go and let your mind relax.  This might be a time when the Lord speaks to your quieted heart - your handy journal can capture the main idea of His words, but the important thing is not "to do", but "to be". And allow this to be a time when you keep your heart open, where family can come and you listen to their hearts...keep the attitude of "being" and not "doing" while you interact, and see how that affects the family members that come to your "tea time".

4.  Start a virtual collection on pinterest or tumblr.  Limit yourself to 5 minutes on one or the other however.  This becomes a diary of your personal likes, the beauty you are attracted to, the things you are curious about, joy and beauty that is being revealed to you.  It can also be a quick reference to that beauty.  In a very small way, you are creating a personal space for your own likes and loves.

5.  Start a journal:  1)  consider a "quote journal" in your own handwriting.  It will be a keepsake!  Are you writing blessings in a journal?  Consider using the same one for quotes in order to only keep up with one journal.  2).  a nature journal; visually record your surroundings - outside and in!  Sketch, watercolor, use color pencils.  Date your entries. 3).  an art journal; a combination of words and images, collaged, drawn, doodled, sketched, painted colored.  The key is freedom and no concern for the finished product...it is the process that is important!  Don't try to be perfect and let that perfectionism rob you of the benefits of journal keeping!

6. Simplify:  this one word has ramifications in many areas of our life.  Start out by listing possible areas of "too much" that need to be addressed.  Three online places that I like:
a) Home Sanctuary - Christian and her mostly daily emails lead you to clean or maintain a small area, breaking the task into bites even the most busy person can achieve. Want to make your home - your sanctuary? You're in the right place. Come on in and join us!
b) Small Notebook - A Christian blogger in a small home who loves to share the joys and largeness of "small living".  Her family lives in a small space, so she has lots of good ideas for keeping that space from getting full and organizing it.  Small Notebook gives you practical tips and encouragement to simplify your home, your finances, and your time. She hasn't posted since January of 2015, but the blog and all the goodness is still there.
c) Simple Mom - a space dedicated to helping families live simple and intentionally. A book "Organized Simplicity" and "One Bite at a Time" helps make the "simplifying" task, well, simple!

A word of caution - don't let "simplifying" become an issue of overwhelm!  These 3 blogs can help, but give yourself permission to go at a pace is comfortable to you.  I subscribe to "Home Sanctuary", because I like the daily prompts (which I choose to do or not do).  "Small Notebook" is a place I visit during leisurely minutes for inspiration to do more with less.  The same with "Simple Mom".  My visits to these two sites might be once a month, and probably reflects my season in life.  You might find a different routine would fit your lifestyle in a better way.

One final recommendation...three "simplifying" sources are all you need.  You might find a different three than these, but limit yourself to three.  Anything more is probably procrastination at beginning the task of simplification!

7.  Take deep cleansing breaths.  They increase the oxygen that your brain receives, help to cleanse your body of impurities, and release minor stress.  Notice times when you sigh.  Have you been holding your breath unconsciously and your body has just made an attempt to get more oxygen?  Take these opportunities to do several deep breaths...and send sentence prayers to God during the breaths!

Praying for Him to lead you into the simplicity of devotion to Him
by letting go of all that is not of Him...
(2 Corinthians 11:3)

How to Walk Out of Self-Sufficiency {It's Easier Than You Might Think...}

Faith is hard to come by some days.

This former perfectionist still drifts towards self-sufficiency.  The spiritual disciplines can become the end instead of the vehicle to journey into His Presence.

My stressed out body lets me know that I have wandered, and now I recognize that my mental state of “being out of sorts” has little to do with the pressures of the world or the schemes of the enemy, but rather it is because of my heart, still prone to wander…

I need to change my perspective…like Job.
My life hasn’t been reduced like his.  That is perspective right there!

I have been in Job lately, reading chronologically with my sweet teen through the Bible.  Job was asking “why God…” when all of a sudden, God comes in {after 37 long chapters of man’s wisdom, mind you} and “spoke to Job out of the storm.”

Wow!
Selah…{pause and think about that!}.

God has a few questions for Job, like:

Who is this that obscures my plans
    with words without knowledge?

  Brace yourself like a man;
    I will question you,
    and you shall answer me.
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
...

What is the way to the abode of light?
    And where does darkness reside?
Can you take them to their places?

Do you know the paths to their dwellings?

Surely you know, for you were already born!
You have lived so many years!

God continues speaking of all sorts of wonders, each one illustrating that He is the one in total control - the creation and the continuing rhythm of life…all are sustained by God’s hand.  We can only comprehend a fraction of the entire picture of our lives and all of life on earth; then the heavens are even beyond this. When we look at just the simple processes that we observe everyday, we can begin to move to looking at our lives from God's point of view, instead of our limited earth-bound vision.

Whenever we question “why, God”, we show that we believe we are the ones in control.
There it is again - my self-sufficiency rearing up in my being…a grandiose heart blind to its short sightedness!  Such is the nature of the flesh!

Notice the bolded and italicized verse, Job 38:2, and these particular words: “that obscures my plans with words without knowledge”.   God is saying that we actually hide our ability to perceive His plans for us when we enter into that domain ruled by our own fruitless words and thinking!

So, when faith seems far away and I have drifted into controlling my life apart from Him again...

a walk outside grounds me.

I can see the heavens, grass, trees, rocks and insects.
I hear birds and crickets.
Depending on my direction, I can walk beside a pond or come up to a vegetable garden.
A spent dandelion head reminds me of the charm of making a wish.
A hopeful kitten checks for a treat in my hand.
It is fall, so masses of color are everywhere.
Leaves let go of their anchor and pirouette to the ground.
Dried abundance crunches underfoot.
The air smells pungent and warm.
I am in the midst of everything God has designed…

and my perspective is lifted from hidden “whys” to the true questions…

“How should I respond to this?”

and

“What do You want me to learn from this?”
