Saint Gobnait - Musings about an Ancient Irish Holy Woman

A white stage, inspired by St. Gobnait's story....

"Gobnait" (pronounced GAWB-net) is the Irish version of Abigail - In Hebrew Abigail means "my father is joy".  And I cannot help but think about these verses:

"...in your presence there is fullness of joy..."
Psalm 16:11

"...You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
by anointing you with the oil of joy..."
Psalm 45:7

"... the joy of the LORD is your strength..."
Nehemiah 8:10

St Gobnait is one of few women Irish saints we have and she lived around the 5th– 6th century. She is known as the saint for bees and beekeepers. She is also the patron of the sick and it is likely that she used honey as a healing medicine (which is considered to be one of the three great Celtic healers - the other two being water and labor).

Gobnait was born in County Clare. She fled from Clare and took refuge in the Aran Islands, where she encountered an angel who instructed her to go on a journey. The angel told her that when she came upon nine white deer, that would be her "resurrection place".   She wandered through Waterford, Cork, and Kerry in search. At first she saw three white deer in Clondrohid and followed them to Ballymakeera where she saw six more.  Finally, when Gobnait arrived in Ballyvourney, where there was a small rise overlooking the River Sullane, she saw nine white deer grazing all together just as the angel had promised, so she settled there and founded her monastic community.

Christine Valters Paintner writes: There is a deep and rich tradition among the Irish monks to seek out the place of one’s resurrection. This was done through the practice of peregrinatio, a setting sail without oar or rudder to let the currents of love carry you. (This happened in metaphoric ways as well.)

In Christian iconography, the stag/buck is a representative of aspiring to be closer to God (consider Psalm 42:1). It is a symbol of thirsting for purity (this plays into the color white, too) and union with the Holy Spirit. The stag is also a symbol of solitude and going within to connect with spiritual wisdom.

St Gobnait shows us to listen to our hearts to find our home and once there do all in your calling to love and protect it.  (Jean Wise)

"Still" is a verb...

"...learning how to be still,
to be really still and LET life happen -
that stillness becomes a
radiance..."
Morgan Freeman

from my class "Be Still" - a little grungy processing - all the vintage laces are mine with a beautiful rose from the bouquet that my dh got me for my birthday...

Learning to Still, Life:

Finding the light ~
     {remembering that He is the Light}

Looking with intention ~
     {you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart and all your soul}

Slowing down in order to see what is already there ~
      {See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?}

These are the steps I've adopted so that I can do still life photography...

I've always read that word - still -
as an adjective...

I am learning it is a verb.

Cultivate Quiet...

Every kind of creative work demands solitude, and being alone, constructively alone, is a prerequisite for every phase of the creative process.”

My word for the year - "Finish"

Hearing my word for 2014 really happened during the regular time frame...during the month of January...it is just now that I seem to have time to write about it...

bible-verses

The word whispered around the back portions of my mind - I wasn't sure if it was just my need to accomplish cleaning off my desk in my office/art studio, or gaining some sort of organization after 6 months of seeming chaotic life...(my desk is still piled, but project after project is moving off...FINISHED!)

"FINISH"!

It is a triumphant call - He calls me to "finish" because He declared "It is finished"...Everything is settled...

He will perfect that which concerns me -
He has given us everything I need for life and Godliness -
His gift and calling is irrevocable -

I looked at places where the word shows up in Scripture, and found three that leaped out to me:

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  James 1:4 NIV
Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means.  2 Corinthians 8:11 NIV
However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me--the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace.   Acts 20:24 NIV

The very day I decided that the word dancing around my mind had the emphasis of the Spirit with it, this article was delivered to my inbox:

There is an "It is Finished" sound in the kingdom. Are we releasing it?

This excerpt captures the tone of what I was hearing:
The governmental power of 'NOW Sound" is that we know He is King, it is finished, and Father is governing through the release of the sound of His sons and we are releasing what He is revealing, right here, right NOW!

When I read about worship, I automatically include the act of creating any art, honoring Him by releasing the creativity He has placed within us, in the context of worship...

He is saying:

Finish the race I have set before you...
I have released you into the fullness of your passions and calling!

Finish the creative explosions released within you...
Release the creativity I have placed within you to the sphere of your influence!

Finish through perseverance...
Maturity and completeness come only through the daily practice of reaching towards Me, seeking to reflect Me to the world...in all you do, keep going, experimenting, exploring, wondering, making, moving, ministering, revealing...

I hear Him cheering me on...
What will He accomplish in this coming year?  I cannot wait as I consider all the ideas, half formed, some almost complete...finished!

My prayer: "Establish the work of his hands..."

The prompt over at Texture Tuesday today is "light", so I am recycling an older photo because of how the light was coming in through the window - you might have seen it before, as I believe I did this during the first "Beyond Layers" class that Kim hosted...
Processed with Kim's "Revolution" texture and a lot of fixing of the photo below!

The "before" photo:
Well, I was so excited about taking the picture that I didn't even look at the floor that needed sweeping!  And FYI, the window sill got a coat of paint after this picture too!

Fog - beautifing the existing beauties...

We've had many foggy days lately - but this particular day was last spring because the bluebonnets were blooming - and then this perfect quote inspired the poem...I do love the fog!

Fog

A holy hush descends,
even nature whispers...
not wishing to disturb
the majesty, kneeled to earth,

bequeathing a crown of awe
to mortals.

What I've been working on since we've been offline -

We went for a nature walk on Wednesday, before the storm and cold weather came in...
and the ice made a nice backdrop for the collection!
The bluish tint comes from the ice, and I thought it made a nice natural touch...

The Secret to Abundance...

Give...

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure,
pressed down,
shaken together
and running over,
will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
Luke 6:38 NIV

I love these Rose of Sharon flowers; I have two bushes that fight for survival in our rocky property, gifts from a good friend.  One produces white blossoms and one produces...this!  And when it is time to bloom, their meager scratched and clawed existence does not hold back the bounty they are destined to give - look at the pollen!  The bees are drunk this time of year...

Cherry Blossoming Trees in Fresco and experimenting with a photo frame...

Playing with an idea I came across - the cherry tree blossoms in our backyard with a "fresco" filter and Kim Klassen's "awake" texture at softlight, framed and placed over a photo frame of the cherry blossoms from a different angle and a different year...

The same image used for the photo frame, framed and left in color (no texture over it)

I like both images, the top one was "saved" using the Fresco filter - I am beginning to really NEED a better digital camera - more than a little point and shoot!

3 Praying Girls...In The Studio Friday

Some of what I've been working on this week...a series on praying girls...

Actually, "Guard Your Heart" is an older piece, and I have another piece - "She Gathered Hope" that was a companion.  I always intended to do a third - "Where Does My Help Come From" - and I am working on it (it will be the middle).  I am doing a reproduction of "She Gathered Hope" as the original sold and my photos for prints just aren't turning out the way I wanted...so I will finish the series AND get good photos before the originals are sold!

Joining over at "In the Studio" and "Paint Party Friday"...

Another Project Peek...

Sweet Tweener has always liked white tigers...she chose this kit several years ago,
and I have always worked on it during our summer break...

"New Creation" creativity...butterflies to print for projects...

A harvest of souls...

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB

This butterfly printable can be found here

I grew up in a church that used many symbols to convey the truth of the Scripture.  One such symbol was that of the butterfly, which symbolized the new birth; a new creature/identity/person was formed when the Holy Spirit indwelt our hearts - just as a new creature - able to fly -  emerges from the cocoon of the old caterpillar...

- PLUS -

I love old books and projects made with text...so of course I had to love this when I saw it on pinterest.

Download a digital copy here (without the watermark)

I couldn't find the butterfly printable, though,
so I decided to make my own, as I had collected quite a few butterfly images over the years.  Sweet Tweener wanted to learn some more photoshop techniques this week, too.  You can see what we created to the right ....

These butterflies are about twice as large as the ones in the Pinterest example - so I am glad to have both sets available, now!

A lot of times the pages of an old novel are smaller than the standard 8 1/2 by 11 inch printer sheet, and most printers can handle that...but the sheet of butterflies I made was a full sheet size, and I didn't want to change that...so to print I used spray adhesive and sprayed a sheet of copy paper, then smoothed my book pages onto the adhesive.  This brand is just what our local craft store had - it only has to hold while going through the printer, so nothing needs to be perfect...I just made sure the adhesive was covered...(that way it wouldn't stick while going through the printer)...
All printed out and now it is time to start snipping!
Here they are, ready to go...some on Japanese text, some on an old dictionary page...

Can't wait to use them!  Stay tuned to see the finished project!

Circling Grace and Beauty - photo art

Flowers and petals from our yard - words from Ann Voskamp here

Beauty and grace...
Grace is beautiful...

To see the world in a grain of sand, and to see heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hands, and eternity in an hour.

Simple Devotion...

A simple faith is to be desired...
It can be summed up in one word -
Jesus.
And that is all we need.
Discovering all we can about
His person
His work
His desires
will take us an
Eternity.

I can think of no better way to live it...
