He Will Come Like the Rain...

It has been so, so long since I posted any of my stained glass work...I truly love it, but it seems mixed media has taken over more over the past year...

A verse has just really been on my heart a lot lately:

It contains the words "He will come to us like the rain"...I have seen it in a lot of art as well {like here and one I found via tumblr and pinned here}...the Lord is knocking on the door of my understanding...there is something here he wants me to see...

The square to the left of the bevel has a pattern that looks like raindrops...
The image above and the one below show how beautiful each style of glass is
(each section is a different patterned glass...)
The one in the upper left of the piece is wavy - hard to see in pictures...

The lights in the kitchen have a yellow tint and my countertops are off white, and I always get this warm peachy vanilla effect when I take pictures using the island as a base...

I added 3 crystal beads that dangle somewhat freely - I thought they furthered the idea of raindrops...or since there are three, perhaps the Trinity?

He will Come Like the Rain:

And what has the Lord been whispering?  Look at the entire verse:

So let us know, let us press on to know the LORD. His going forth is as certain as the dawn; And He will come to us like the rain, Like the spring rain watering the earth.
Hosea 6:3 NASB

"Let us press on to know the Lord" - an invitation to go deep...and it connects strongly with my word "contemplate" for the year - like this verse is the summation of His desire for our time together.
{I already know my word for the coming year...♥...coming soon}

Defining Art Therapy...{Creative Pathways}

As I have moved forward in combining my passion {creating} and my purpose {counseling} I have really had it on my heart to share the definition of art therapy in this place...and to investigate how others have infused their faith into the process.  The "text book" definitions are included in this post - the next will explore the spiritual component in more depth...

One thing I enjoyed as I read the formal definitions of art therapy is how the processes apply to people who  are "seeking personal development" - doesn't that apply to us all?  The beautiful thing is that we can choose to seek guidance as we grow or as creatives and innovators, we pursue the path on our own!  I invite you to read through the definitions, and note {journal?} the benefits that speak to you...

All the artwork here is mine - done with clients (it is encouraging to some to have the counselor do art with them ♥) and some just to express what was in my heart...

wings, freedom, flying - all point to the comfort of feeling at "home in one's own life"

One
The American Art Therapy Association offers this definition:

Art therapy is the therapeutic use of art making, within a professional relationship, by people who experience illness, trauma, or challenges in living, and by people who seek personal development.  Through creating art and reflecting on the art products and processes, people can increase awareness of self and others cope with symptoms, stress, and traumatic experiences; enhance cognitive abilities; and enjoy the life-affirming pleasures of making art.

Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative process of art making to improve and enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of individuals of all ages.
 Research in the field confirms that the creative process involved in artistic self-expression helps people to become more physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy and functional, resolve conflicts and problems, develop interpersonal skills, manage behavior, reduce stress, handle life adjustments, and achieve insight. {my thought - I believe this definition applies to all of us as we live our daily lives!♥}
Two
(a list compiled from other places with art therapy definitions)
Art Therapy is a form of therapy that uses art as a means of expressing and working through emotional difficulties.

a) Allows for the expression and processing of emotions that may be difficult to put into words.
b) Gives opportunity for the externalization of emotional issues encouraging clients to see other alternatives.
c)  Makes verbal expression more accessible
d)  Provides the client with insight into the issues they are dealing with so they can move forward in their healing.
e)  Helps bring change to destructive patterns of behavior

Sometimes the decision to uncover past trauma is an event in and of itself - this was done to help a person with complex DID feel safe in even making the choice to move into facing deep trauma or "standing" still for a while...allowing her current level of healing to further stabilize her life.

Three
(love this list!)
According to the Australian and New Zealand Arts Therapy Association, art therapy can help:

a) reduce stress
b) increase self compassion
c)  resolve conflicts
d) develop interpersonal skills
e) achieve insight
f) manage problematic behavior
g) express feelings that may be difficult to verbalise
h) explore their imagination and creativity
i) develop healthy coping skills and focus
j) improve confidence
k) identify and clarify issues and concerns
l) increase communication skills
m)share in a safe nurturing environment
n) improve motor skills and physical coordination
o) identify blocks to emotional expression and personal growth.

I found this little girls face in a magazine and just loved the look on it - and the position of her hands...I made this just as a message - to help clients (even myself!) think about how to release the unhealthy patterns of responding to relationships that were learned in childhood, and to enjoy the childlike quality of spontaneity...

 Children

(this definition is a compilation of many different sources I found)

Children do not possess the same ability to verbalize difficult feelings and experiences that adults do.

Because of their difficulty with verbal expression and abstract thinking, talk therapy is often very limited with children.

Art therapy is a psychotherapeutic service and form of expressive therapy that gives kids the chance to participate in creative, nonverbal expression through the use of art materials. In other words, art therapy communicates when words simply cannot.

Did you learn anything new?
Or do you have more understanding now as to why you love, love, love to make art?

I'd love to hear your thoughts...

Money 101 - for parents & teens...

I get these infographics delivered to my inbox every day - so many different topics, and a quick glance gives lots of information...and I click "delete" on the ones I am not interested in...maybe because it is just before Christmas, maybe because sweet tweener had an endless list of "wants", maybe because she has saved 1/3 of her allowance for over 18 months and has quite a sizeable savings account for an 11 year old, plus a big chunk of change in her allowance jar, but whatever the reason - I think you would like this information too!

Love, God...

The beauty of this world, a life made valuable because He has said we are, the still season of contemplation, of slowing activity leading to the quiet rest of winter - and gatherings...enjoy this love note from God as nature prepares us for His Advent...

How blessed is God! And what a blessing he is!
He’s the Father of our Master, Jesus Christ, and takes us to the high places of blessing in Him.
Long before He laid down earth’s foundations, He had us in mind,
had settled on us as the focus of His love,
to be made whole and holy by His love.
Long, long ago He decided to adopt us into His family through Jesus Christ.
(What pleasure He took in planning this!)
He wanted us to enter into the celebration of His lavish gift-giving by the hand of His beloved Son.

Because of the sacrifice of the Messiah,
His blood poured out on the altar of the Cross,
we’re a free people—
free of penalties and punishments chalked up by all our misdeeds.
And not just barely free, either.

Abundantly free!

He thought of everything,
provided for everything we could possibly need,
letting us in on the plans He took such delight in making.
He set it all out before us in Christ,
a long-range plan in which everything would be brought together and summed up in Him,
everything in deepest heaven,
everything on planet earth.

It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.
Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up,
He had his eye on us,
had designs on us for glorious living,
part of the overall purpose He is working out in everything and everyone.

(via Vintage Indie)

It’s in Christ that you,
once you heard the truth and believed it (this Message of your salvation),
found yourselves home free—signed, sealed, and delivered by the Holy Spirit.
This signet from God is the first installment on what’s coming,
a reminder that we’ll get everything God has planned for us,
a praising and glorious life.

Love, God

That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus
and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus,
I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—
every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks.

But I do more than thank.
I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—
to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing Him personally,
your eyes focused and clear,
so that you can see exactly what it is He is calling you to do,
grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life He has for His followers,
oh, the utter extravagance of His work in us who trust Him—
endless energy, boundless strength!
{from Ephesians, Chapter One, The Message Bible}

Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving Holiday!

Simplicity + Creativity = Art Therapy

The glory of God is man fully alive...
St. Ireneus

Hand knit rustic cowl / gray winter wheat / autumn accessory / country chic / earthy / warm gray / handmade on Etsy
Just another photograph I wish I had taken...Photo Credit here...

So much of the time we think of "Art Therapy" in terms of what we create
or guide others to create, to let out those things deep in our souls
that have no expression with other forms of communication...

But therapeutic art can also be those creations that draw out of our souls some depth of response...
Images like this one - perfectly arranged, simple, spare, the natural elements being the focus...
this evokes quietness in my own soul, a sense of comfort and order
as I view textures, lines, form, color...

A reminder that wholeness can be found in quiet simplicity...

For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
"In repentance and rest you will be saved, In quietness and trust is your strength."
Isaiah 30:15

Get More Healing from Your Art - Connecting Your Right and Left Brain {Creative Healing Pathways #3}

You haven't missed the first two...I just knew what I wanted to write for the third topic already!

This image is from a series of Mercedes Benz ads.  The text reads:

Left brain: I am the left brain. I am a scientist. A mathematician. I love the familiar. I categorize. I am accurate. Linear. Analytical. Strategic. I am practical. Always in control. A master of words and language. Realistic. I calculate equations and play with numbers. I am order. I am logic. I know exactly who I am.

Right brain: I am the right brain. I am creativity. A free spirit. I am passion. Yearning. Sensuality. I am the sound of roaring laughter. I am taste. The feeling of sand beneath bare feet. I am movement. Vivid colors. I am the urge to paint on an empty canvas. I am boundless imagination. Art. Poetry. I sense. I feel. I am everything I wanted to be.

[Image and text from post: Left Brain/Right Brain: Gorgeously Illustrated Mercedes Benz Ads.]

If you are involved in creating - fine art, photography, coreography, writing, journaling, art journaling, textile arts, arts and crafts, etc... - you have most likely already experienced that sense of connection with yourself, your:
emotions,
discovery,
wounds,
secrets,
hopes,
desires,
dreams,
goals,
a sense of value and worth,
Creator,
ideas,
personal truth...

This post is geared more for those who are creating without words - the painters, the ones working with movement or sound or collages...feeling without formula so to speak...

There is a profound release of oneself into these expressions.  That release is enough all by itself to give merit and value to the finished product as well as the process.  But perhaps you want to take that sense of release and understand it more fully...this is "connecting the right brain and the left brain".

Just how is this accomplished?  One way is to do an "objective analysis", an impartial inventory so to speak...of  what you can observe about your art...

1.  What type of Lines did I use?  Thick, thin, horizontal, curved, long, continuous, broken, and so on.
2.   What type of Shapes did I use?  Triangles, squares, 3-D, tiny, massive, symmetrical, and so on.
3.  What type of Colors  I use?  Bright, dull, warm, cool, light, heavy, dark, transparent, and so on.
4.  What Textures did I use?   Smooth, rough, hard, dense, loose, uneven, and so on.
5.  What type of Composition did I use?  Repetitive, formal, loose,  geometric, organic, and so on.

A "subjective analysis" of each area would include adjectives that encapsulate the emotional (to you) quality of the work...dynamic, stark, soothing, unpleasant, pleasant, invigorating, shadowy, soft, cold, warm, inspiring, surreal, flowing, awkward, unifying, and so on...

Reflections on Solitude...

An assignment from Beyond Layers...everyone gets the same image to play with...and find a quote that fits with what the image speaks to each... Closely related to my One Word for 2012, contemplate, is the word solitude...and several more good quotes:

Inside myself is a place where I live all alone, and that's where I renew my springs that never dry up.  ~Pearl Buck

True silence is the rest of the mind, and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.  ~William Penn

Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.  ~John Muir

It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.  ~K.T. Jong

Language... has created the word "loneliness" to express the pain of being alone.  And it has created the word "solitude" to express the glory of being alone.  ~Paul Johannes Tillich, The Eternal Now

And He said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a secluded place
and rest a while..." Mark 6:31 NASB
